CANDLE CARE Tips to Burn like a Pro:

THE BASICS

The following guidelines apply to the burning of all candles including Coast of Jamaica candles.

 

• Never leave a burning candle unattended.

​

• Keep burning candles away from flammable materials, children and pets.

​

• Do not place candles on or near other heat sources.

​

• Burn the candles on heat resistant surfaces

​

• Extinguish candles with great care ensuring that hot wax does not splatter.

​

• Keep the hot wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches or any other flammable materials

​

• Do not allow anything to drop into the hot wax pool such as parts of the wick or a match

MY CANDLE IS SMOKING

Here are some tips to get a smoke-free burn from your candle!

 

• Do not place your candles in a drafty area such as a hallway, near a window or by a fireplace

​

• When a candle is placed in a drafty area, the draft can cause the flame to produce smoke

​

• Once the draft is removed, the candle should return to normal

​

• Do not burn your candle for longer than 3 hours at a time.

TUNNELING

We recommend burning your Coast of Jamaica Candle long enough to achieve a full melt pool every time you light it!

 

This means that all of the wax on the top of the candle is melted right to the edges. This may be 1-2 hours.

 

If you are consistently burning the candle for shorter amounts of time and not allowing the wax to melt to the edges of the glass you may notice the candle start to tunnel.

 

We do not recommend cutting out the excess wax to fix the tunneling. If you allow your candle to burn for longer periods of time, this problem should begin to solve itself. The first burn is critical because wax has "memory", meaning it tends to follow the path of its last point of melting and cooling.

CANDLE SWEATING

In most cases, this is just something caused by temperature fluctuations and won't affect the performance of the candle.

 

Exposure to heat or humidity is the most common cause for seating,;hotter, damper conditions increase the odds that a candle sweats.

 

It can help to keep a sweating candle out of direct sunlight or away from heat sources like areas that attract heat.

FRAGRANCE PERFORMANCE

A candle's scent throw is a combination of the fragrance itself, the heat of the pooled wax and the surface area of the melt pool.

 

If your are burning a small candle, try burning your candle in a smaller room, such as a bathroom or home office. It could be that the room size your have your candles burning in is too big for your to smell the scent throw.

 

You can also double up on smaller candles to multiply the scent throw. Also try burning your candles for a longer period of time, it could be that the candle has a subtle smell and may need to burn a little longer to diffuse the scent.

 

If none of these work, it could be unfortunately just be a flaw in the candle's creation. The fragrances used may not be potent enough.

BURN EXPERIENCE

Ensure wick is up right to ensure an even burn.If the wick bends over slightly – extinguish the flame, re trim to 1/8" before relighting.

 

This will also help to keep the wax pool clear from debris. On the first burn, the candle must be allowed to achieve need a full melt pool across the top of the candle.

 

If the candle is extinguished prior to achieving this, tunneling may occur. To ensure you achieve a full melt pool, burn your candle for a minimum of 1 hour or until all the wax has melted evenly to the edge.

WOODWICK CARE TIPS

Trimming your wooden wick candles are very important due to the carbon build up on the wood. Trimming your wick allows the candle to have a steady flame and prevents excessive sooting. 

​

If your wooden wick candle has a flame that is taller than 1in, please carefully extinguish the candle. Once the candle is extinguished and the wax has fully hardened, trim your wooden wick down to 1/4'', to remove any of the black carbon layer.

 

Be sure to discard the wick remanence so it does not melt with the wax in your candle.

 

This will allow the candle to maintain normal flame and provide the best burning experience!
